The answer lies in the subatomic particles known as neutrinos. Subatomic particles are the smallest units of matter, and the properties of neutrinos remain poorly understood. Because they pass straight through matter, they are extremely difficult to detect, despite the fact that they exist all around us in nature—they rain down on Earth from the sun, and they are generated when cosmic rays hit the atmosphere. The Hyper-Kamiokande facility (currently under construc-tion) and its predecessors Kamiokande and Super-Kamiokande are observatories designed to detect neutrinos. Sensors cap-ture the light produced by the rare collisions of neutrinos with electrons or nuclei in water molecules. “flavors,” of neutrino, and that neutrinos change their flavor over time—a phenomenon known as oscillation. This made it evident that neutrinos have mass and move slower than the speed of light. The conventional hypothesis that neutrinos were massless was overturned, dramatically expanding the horizons of research in the field. This advance led to the emergence of a new topic: whether there was a difference between neutrino and antineutrino oscil-lations. The prefix “anti” is used to refer to matter composed of subatomic particles that have the opposite electric charge to that of ordinary matter. The concept of antimatter is linked to the formation of the universe. Today, it is widely accepted that the universe was created in an explosive expansion known as the Big Bang. When sub- atomic particles took shape in the vacuum of space in the early universe, antiparticles would have necessarily been created as well. This is because the net electric charge before and after a reaction must remain the same. However, almost no anti- matter exists in the universe today.
