9th Green Social Contribution AwardMIPIM Asia Awards 2022 Best Urban Regeneration Project / BronzeSAKURA MACHI Kumamoto and SAKURA MACHI GardenA large-scale mixed-used development project and an open space project were integrated in a district that includes Hanabatake Park, Hanabatake Plaza and Hirokoji Street, where the Hosokawa family’s Yoshuntei Garden was once located. The redeveloped facility’s rooftop garden, located some 30 meters above ground, restored the view of Kumamoto Castle, here-tofore unattainable from the ground level in modern times, and creating a scenic “garden connection to Kumamoto Castle.” The tiered lower floors of the building are integrated with open spaces to yield an urban design that carries the landscape of the castle town into the future.20th Environmental and Equipment Design Award / Award of ExcellenceKikkoman R&D CenterThis R&D center was designed to stimulate the five senses and allow occupants to feel the changes and fluctuations of time and the seasons, and to make work more enjoyable. A simple configuration was adopted, with the laboratory area on the first floor and an open space for office work and other functions on the second floor. Activities can be glimpsed in the nearly “one-room” space, and natural light, wind, and views of the surrounding landscape can be enjoyed from the exterior and roof. Various techniques were combined to create an environment that varies depending on the vantage point, and is almost natural in how it changes with the passing of time. These include floor vented air conditioning, parapet air inlets, natural ventilation, natural lighting and circadian lighting control, acoustic control via interior finish and staggered floors, etc. The workplace allows researchers to select their environment and space according to their various activities and preferences.Biophilic Design Award 2022 AWARD/1stplaceMIPIM Asia Awards 2022 Best Retail Development/SILVERRooftop/Wall Greening Technology Contest / Minister of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism AwardJR Kumamoto Station BuildingJR Kumamoto Station Building is a commercial facility located in front of Kumamoto Station, land gateway to Kumamoto, a city blessed with abundant nature. The centerpiece of the facility is a vertical garden that blends nature with commercial space by incorpo-rating water and greenery. Nikken Sekkei’s landscape and environmental design teams, along with various other specialists, worked together to reproduce real nature within the building. Informed by lighting environment analysis and growth environment tests, native species were actively used in the pursuit of a design that would allow people to sense daily closeness with nature.Japan Wood Design Award / Honorable Mention AwardShowa Gakuin Elementary School West Wing“CLT two-way flat slabs” were adopted to minimize floor and building height while maximizing ceiling height after considering the level of connection with the existing school building and the height limits of the scenic zone at the school’s location. The use of CLT as a structural material reduces LCA environmental impacts during construc-tion by approximately 30% compared to concrete construction. The CLT is exposed, and educational signs and other means were employed to impart upon the students a sense of the wood’s expression and texture, creating a space that encourages them to think about the environment and interact with each other.Realizing a workplace in the style of ABW (Activity Based Working)Biophilic design with continuous water and greenery inside and outside the buildingJapanese cedar cross laminated timber (CLT) was used in the structural and interior materials to create a dynamic, sophisticated learning spaceThe “Kumamoto Castle Connecting Garden” perpetuates the castle town landcape for the next 100 yearsENVIRONMENT-RELATED AWARDS AND CERTIFICATIONS4
