Nikken Sekkei and Shenzhen University’s School of Architecture & Urban Planning Hold "New Trends and Practices in Sustainable Design" Forum
(Shenzhen) - Nikken Sekkei and Shenzhen University’s School of Architecture & Urban Planning held a forum on the theme of "New Trends and Practices in Sustainable Design" at the on-campus Benyuan Hall on December 8.
The forum was carried online and live-streamed via dual-channel, simultaneous Japanese-Chinese interpretation. About 60 participants attended the event in person, while some 2,000 logged in to view the live stream.
Opening remarks were made by Nikken Sekkei President and CEO Atsushi Omatsu, Jianmin Meng, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, and Yue Fan, Dean of Shenzhen University's School of Architecture and Urban Planning. Thereafter, Nikken Sekkei (Shenzhen) General Manager Xiaohui Zhang and Professor Fan read aloud the Strategic Cooperation Agreement that has been executed between the firm and the school.
Wataru Tanaka, Executive Officer and Principal at Nikken Sekkei’s Urban and Landscape Design Group, delivered the keynote speech, "Sustainable Design – A City Level Challenge". He outlined the company’s design goals, which include several iterations of sustainability: environmental, social, economic, as well as sustainability in emergency situations. He also described the basic tenets of low-carbon urban design, along with the five strategies that Nikken Sekkei employs in designing sustainable cities: green centric developments, transit-oriented developments (TODs), urban renewal, public realm transformation, and area energy management.
Ken Miyoshi, Nikken Sekkei Global Design Department Director, offered a presentation on Japan's national policy goal of achieving zero net carbon emissions by 2050, as well as the company’s emergency climate declaration. He introduced the efforts of both the government and the firm in the context of Japan's effort toward becoming a carbon-neutral society, the application of different on-site policies for new and existing buildings, and off-site energy optimization methods.
In their closing remarks, representatives from Nikken Sekkei and Shenzhen University School of Architecture and Urban Planning expressed their commitment to the cause of furthering collaboration and for developing high-level research and education in order to contribute to a better future for cities and architecture.
