"HOKI Museum," a hall of fame for realist painting set against the backdrop of lush forests, is set to reopen following its renovation.

This museum, dedicated to realist painting and known for its iconic 30-meter cantilevered structure that curves gently as it overlaps, will reopen on August 1, 2020, having recovered from flood damage caused by last year’s torrential rains.
The main building houses a collection of approximately 480 masterpieces of realist painting, primarily by living artists, collected by the owner, Mr. Hoki. It also features an Italian restaurant and a café where visitors can enjoy authentic Italian cuisine and wine while gazing out at the forest.
Furthermore, with the aim of making the building itself part of Mr. Hoki’s collection, in addition to its distinctive exterior form, the interior space has been meticulously designed to eliminate all visual distractions—such as grout lines in wall finishes, seams in flooring, and pendant lighting—creating an optimal viewing environment where visitors can engage with each realistic painting in isolation from the outside world.
During the renovation, major electrical and heating systems were relocated to ground level, and watertight doors were installed throughout the building—measures implemented to prevent unpredictable flood damage caused by the torrential downpours that have been occurring in various regions in recent years.Furthermore, as this marks a significant 10-year milestone, updates have been made to enhance the museum’s appeal, including the renewal of interior finishes and the introduction of audio guides using the latest digital tools.
Since last fall, driven by the client’s strong commitment to the reopening, the original designers and contractors have worked together as one team to bring this project to fruition. We invite you to visit the HOKI Museum, now enhanced with new attractions.

HOKI Museum A Message from Director Hiroko Hoki
Last October, torrential rains caused the museum to flood. Since there are no rivers nearby, we never imagined we would suffer flood damage. Please be careful during these times of extreme weather. Thanks to your support, we were able to rebuild the museum to be flood-resistant. As we approach our 10th anniversary in November, we look forward to taking another step forward.

To commemorate the museum’s 10th anniversary and its reopening, we are presenting an exhibition of works by Sōsuke Morimoto (1937–2015), a leading Japanese realist painter whose works formed the museum’s very first collection. The “3rd HOKI Museum Grand Prize Exhibition” will also be held concurrently.
