From September 25th to 28th, the 2025 World Design Capital Conference (WDCC2025) was held with great success. As one of the conference's important programs, the "Shanghai Design 100+" Global Competition Announcement and the "Design Innovation City" Forum were held on September 26th, vividly showcasing the appeal of Shanghai's design and drawing up a wonderful blueprint for a Design Innovation City. Nikken Sekkei's Shanghai Xuhui Vanke Center Phase 3 project was recognized and selected as one of the "2025 Shanghai Design 100+ Global Competition TOP 100 Projects."

World Design Capital Conference 2025
On the morning of September 26, Zhongxiao Lu of Nikken Sekkei was invited to speak at the special forum and the "Boundless Design, Renewal and Coexistence - Urban Renewal Innovation Forum" of the "2025 World Design Capital Conference (WDCC2025)," hosted by the Shanghai Municipal People's Government and co-sponsored by UNESCO, where he gave a lecture entitled "The Concept of 'Sharedness' in Urban Renewal."
The practical application of the concept of "commons" has attracted attention in the recent global trend of urbanization, and redevelopment focusing on public spaces, in particular, is becoming a mainstream area of research in the fields of planning and design. In this lecture, we introduced the social practice of the commons concept in the era of existing infrastructure, incorporating recent urban renewal projects completed by Nikken Sekkei in both China and Japan. This is an attempt to break down the barriers between public and private sectors and to change the traditional inertia of the government bearing all the responsibility, through cooperation among diverse stakeholders and the sharing of spatial resources. In public space systems, incentive policies, and promotion mechanisms, we aim to improve economic value through renewal and innovation centered on the commons, and to achieve the sustainable development goals of society.

During the conference, Nikken Sekkei was also invited to exhibit at the "Shanghai Design 100+ Global Competition Special Exhibition," where it vividly presented its innovative POD (PARK TOD) model through an elaborate model. This model aims to integrate rail transit stations with parks and green spaces, organically connecting commercial, office, and green spaces through three-dimensional development. It not only effectively mitigates the heat island effect through natural landscapes but also revitalizes the social and economic vitality of the area through open spaces, thereby creating a future urban unit driven by the two wheels of "transportation + ecology." It represents a leap from a single "transportation hub" to a multifaceted "green life magnetic field," offering a cutting-edge model for the sustainable development of high-density cities.
