Urban Development Is Culture! “Ever-Evolving! Shibuya-Style Urban Development”
~Shibuya Future Design’s First Book to Be Released on November 20~

Shibuya Future Design, a General Incorporated Association (Representative Director: Hideki Koizumi; hereinafter “Shibuya Future Design”) and Nikken Sekkei Ltd. (Headquarters: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; Representative Director President and CEO: Atsushi Omatsu) will release “Ever-Changing! Shibuya-Style Urban Development,” published by Kousakusha Co., Ltd., on November 20.
As Shibuya’s redevelopment—said to be a once-in-a-century project—proceeds, people from various backgrounds involved in the community are sharing ideas and engaging in ongoing discussions to shape the future of Shibuya. A defining feature of Shibuya’s urban development is that people take center stage.People from various sectors—including government agencies, railway operators, developers, academic experts, architectural firms and designers, as well as local neighborhood associations and merchant associations—have been involved, and the project has moved forward through collaboration among this diverse group. This ever-evolving process of urban development has become an integral part of the town’s culture.
This book not only presents the history of redevelopment through photographs and visuals but also organizes the urban development process around five key themes—“Design,” “Community,” “Public Space,” “Management,” and “Future”—and compiles the thoughts of those involved through dialogues and interviews.It explores how the town of Shibuya was created and where it is headed, while also asking what “the essence of Shibuya” truly is.
Additionally, a book launch event will be held on November 12 as part of “SOCIAL INNOVATION WEEK SHIBUYA 2021,” which runs from Friday, November 5, to Sunday, November 14.Kiyoshi Okumori, Head of the Urban Division at Nikken Sekkei Ltd. (Member of the Board Senior Executive Officer), will join Chiaki Hayashi, Co-founder and Director of Loftwork Inc. (Chairman), and Natsuki Sato, Creative Director of EVERY DAY IS THE DAY and Co-CEO Natsuki Sato, and Satoshi Takahashi of CCC Public Service Planning Company President and CEO will engage in a cross-talk discussion on “Shibuya-style” urban development. Participation is free, and the event will also be streamed online, so please be sure to tune in.

I’ve long hoped to compile the activities of those involved in Shibuya’s urban development since the establishment of Shibuya Future Design in 2018 into a book, and I’m truly delighted that this has finally come to fruition.
As a newcomer, I have been able to continue this work for the past four years thanks to an environment that allowed me to draw on the perspectives of ward residents and local residents, as well as my own past experiences, and thanks to the strong commitment and teamwork of Shibuya’s many stakeholders, which led to concrete action.
Community development is not limited to physical infrastructure; it encompasses design, community, public spaces, area management, and—most importantly—people taking center stage, embodying the idea that “community development itself is culture.”
Moving forward, I intend to continue taking on new challenges—listening carefully and taking action—so that even more people can participate proactively.

Community development is the result of the hopes and passion of many people.
The urban development project around Shibuya Station celebrated its grand opening in 2019, and this effort will continue into the future. Many people are deeply committed not only to the final result—a landscape lined with new buildings—but also to the process itself and the vision for what lies ahead.
