Sign Agreement to Realize a Carbon-Neutral Society

We are pleased to announce that the Waseda University (hereinafter “Waseda University”), Nikken Sekkei Ltd. (hereinafter “Nikken Sekkei”), and the Urban Renaissance Agency (hereinafter “UR”) signed an “Agreement Toward the Realization of a Carbon-Neutral Society” (hereinafter “this Agreement”) on December 13, Reiwa 6.

1. Purpose of This Agreement

The purpose of this agreement is for the Waseda University, Nikken Sekkei, and the Urban Renaissance Agency (UR) to cooperate with one another in their respective areas of expertise—including educational activities, research activities, international academic and cultural exchange, the development of new technologies, and the implementation of these technologies in urban development—with the goal of realizing a carbon-neutral society.
Going forward, by combining the technological research achievements in cutting-edge carbon-neutral fields being advanced by Waseda University and Nikken Sekkei with UR Urban Development Corporation’s expertise in promoting urban development, we will strive to achieve sustainable urban development, which is one of the key social challenges facing our society.

・Matters related to human resource development that contributes to educational and research activities
・Research and the development of new technologies aimed at realizing a carbon-neutral society
・Matters related to urban planning aimed at realizing a carbon-neutral society
・Matters related to demonstration experiments and proposals for new systems aimed at societal implementation

3. Implementation Period

From the date of execution of this agreement through March 31, 2026

5. Initiatives by the Three Parties Toward Carbon Neutrality and Community Development

Waseda University In 2021, the university announced the “Waseda Carbon Net Zero Challenge” and established the “Center for Research and Education on a Carbon-Neutral Society (WCANS)” in 2022, with the goal of realizing a carbon-neutral society.Based on the three pillars of research, education, and contribution, we aim to contribute to humanity through the “convergence of knowledge”—spanning not only science and engineering-centered technology fields but also the humanities, social sciences, and interdisciplinary and emerging fields—and to foster an environment for innovation through urban development.

Nikken Sekkei has accumulated a wealth of expertise and experience in architectural design and supervision, urban design, and engineering. We have been given the opportunity to co-create with many clients. Greenhouse gas emissions from the buildings we design account for approximately 1% of Japan’s total.With the goal of realizing a carbon-neutral society by 2050, we take the climate crisis very seriously as a member of the architectural and urban planning community and issued a “Climate Emergency Declaration” in 2021. We are currently working to improve environmental performance in urban planning and architecture.

The history of the Urban Renaissance Agency (URA) began with efforts to resolve the postwar housing shortage. Since 1955, working alongside various stakeholders and adapting to the diversity of each era, we have contributed to the realization of “cities where people thrive” by creating safe, secure, and comfortable communities and lifestyles.Moving forward, we intend to continue responding to your needs by tackling evolving social challenges and aim to remain an indispensable partner in creating “communities where people thrive.” Leveraging the expertise in sustainable urban development we have cultivated over the years, we will devote our full efforts to urban regeneration projects, rental housing initiatives, disaster recovery support, and support for overseas expansion.
