PRESS RELEASE

Nikken Sekkei Ltd. (Headquarters: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; Representative Director: Atsushi Omatsu; President and CEO) has partnered with Taipei Cultural and Creative Development Co., Ltd. (Location: Xinyi District, Taipei City; Representative: Hong Zhumin),the Taipei Cultural and Creative Foundation (Location: Xinyi District, Taipei City; Representative: Tsai Ming-chung), and organized by Plan b Inc. (Location: Zhongshan District, Taipei City; Representative: Yu Shi-ren) and Alife (Location: Zhongshan District, Taipei City;Representative: You Shiren), and will hold exhibitions at SHIBAURA HOUSE in Shibaura, Tokyo, and at PYNT, the headquarters of Nikken Sekkei.

The “Taipei Cultural and Creative Memory Center (TNHCC)” is an exhibition project organized biennially in central Taipei by Taipei Cultural and Creative and Plan b, with the participation of domestic and international designers and companies, aimed at promoting Taiwanese culture and fostering cultural exchange.Held from November 9 to December 3 of last year, the exhibition took “Ideal Home” as its theme against the backdrop of Taiwan’s increasingly diverse living environments. It featured displays that explored the relationship between Private and space, examining contemporary housing and lifestyles both within and outside Taiwan. In July 2025, carrying that same question forward, an exhibition will be held at SHIBAURAHOUSE—designed by architect Kazuyo Sejima—where visitors can envision their own ideal living spaces through a variety of experiences. The “Ideal Home in Tokyo” exhibition is divided into three floors: the 1st floor (“Home from a Social Perspective”), the 2nd floor (“Us in Living Spaces”), and the 5th floor (“The Possibilities of Home”). Each floor offers an opportunity to imagine home from a different perspective.

Nikken Sekkei’s “Commons-Based Housing” Exhibition

Nikken Sekkei will present an exhibition on the first floor centered on the theme of “The Commonsification of Housing.”This exhibition refers to the phenomenon where, due to changes in modern lifestyles, people are spending less time at home, leading to the emergence of various residential activities and objects in public spaces and the broadening of the concept of “residence.” It aims to allow visitors to observe and experience, from different perspectives, how residential elements are proliferating in everyday public spaces.
This video content was created through a collaboration between the “Commons Group” (Project Development Department), which focuses on “behavioral change,” and DDL (Digital Design Lab), which leads digital transformation (DX) in the field of architectural design at Nikken Sekkei.Using examples from Japan—such as offices and public spaces designed by the Commons Group that have expanded into urban environments—the exhibition utilizes two venues, SHIBAURA HOUSE and Nikken Sekkei’s Tokyo Headquarters, to present the “concept of dwelling” and the “objects that realize this concept” at a 1:1 scale via projectors.
At SHIBAURA HOUSE, we are presenting a touch-based, interactive installation, while at Nikken Sekkei’s Tokyo Headquarters, we are showcasing an immersive installation using XR technology that recreates the exhibition held in Taipei.
*The immersive experience at Nikken Sekkei’s Tokyo headquarters is by reservation only.

About the Exhibition “Ideal Home in Tokyo” at the Taipei Cultural and Creative Memory Center

The “Ideal Home in Tokyo” exhibition consists of displays on three floors at the SHIBAURAHOUSE venue—the 1st floor (“Home from a Social Perspective”), the 2nd floor (“Us in Living Spaces”), and the 5th floor (“The Possibilities of Home”)—as well as an immersive XR installation at the Nikken Sekkei Tokyo Headquarters building.

First Floor: A Place to Belong from a Social Perspective

Unlike typical housing exhibitions that begin with timelines and textual information, the “Homes from a Social Perspective” exhibition starts by inviting members of the public to use white paper and drawing tools right at the beginning to sketch their ideal homes. Drawings created by Taiwanese visitors at the Taipei exhibition are also displayed alongside these, sparking cross-cultural exchanges and shared imaginations about housing. Based on the concept of a collaboratively created map, people from Taipei and Tokyo place stickers on locations that hold special meaning for them. By exploring this map, visitors can learn about the memories associated with these places for the people of Taipei, while also inscribing their own memories of daily life onto the map.

Second Floor: Our Living Space

The exhibition “We in Our Living Spaces” explores the characteristics of homes and the values of daily life through three themes: the cultural memory of dwelling, the personality reflected in living spaces, and the feng shui of living spaces. By selecting residential styles popular in Taiwan throughout different historical periods and discussing the historical and cultural contexts reflected in them, the exhibition analyzes the relationship between the characters’ traits and their living spaces using five Japanese and Taiwanese TV dramas as case studies, thereby illustrating how our living environments reflect our thoughts and values. Additionally, an interactive exhibit inspired by the pinball game—a favorite in Taiwan—features eight types of fortune, such as “financial luck” and “romantic luck.” Designed to make learning about the relationship between home and fortune fun, it offers visitors a fresh perspective on their own lives.

5th Floor: The Possibilities of Home Living

In the “Possibilities of Home” exhibition, based on the concept of “coming home,” visitors can listen to audio stories recorded by Huang Zhuyu, a linguist based in Japan who was invited to participate, and learn how the definition of people’s daily lives has changed and been imagined from ancient times to the present. In addition, this exhibition marks another collaboration with the Taiwanese furniture brand HOLA. Various styles of furniture have been transformed into small stickers, allowing both adults and children to easily create collages on drawing cards.

The Goals of the Taipei Cultural and Creative Memory Center’s “Ideal Residence in Tokyo”

Since 2015, the Taipei Cultural and Creative Memory Center has curated exhibitions on various themes, focusing on “the little things in life.” For the 2025 exhibition, the center brought the “Ideal Home” exhibition—originally held in Taipei in 2024—to Japan. Through this exhibition, the center aims to encourage visitors to imagine their own homes and ideal lifestyles as they engage in the process of making “choices” based on their own perspectives.
