Social Issues Surrounding Digital Infrastructure, Including Data Centers

Integrating Core Competencies to Solve Social Challenges in Digital Infrastructure

Solving these social challenges requires more than the efforts of a single company; it necessitates the integration of the core competencies of multiple companies. Therefore, in this initiative, we have formed a business alliance that integrates Nikken Sekkei’s “experience and technical expertise in architectural and building systems design,” R11i’s “knowledge of data center business management and technology, as well as extensive industry connections,” Euras Energy’s “long-standing expertise and track record in renewable energy,” and NTT Anode Energy’s “extensive industry connections—including those in the telecommunications and data center sectors—experience and technical expertise in data center construction and maintenance, and a proven track record in power and renewable energy procurement,” to form a business alliance. Through this partnership, we will address current challenges facing data centers and begin activities aimed at proposing next-generation data center solutions.

Features of Our Consulting Services

We provide planning support based on various DC master plans and deliver optimal engineering solutions.

• From interconnection data centers to hyperscale data centers, we help you understand the requirements of various types of data centers to support the development of your business plans, and provide comprehensive, high-level, one-stop consulting services covering architecture, facilities, energy, IT, and operations to bring those plans to fruition.

We will promote the optimal deployment of data centers within Japan and contribute to enabling the allocation of maximum computing resources to the nation’s digital infrastructure as part of the global infrastructure.

• We will promote a shift from a two-polar concentration in Tokyo and Osaka to a four-polar structure that includes Hokkaido and Kyushu, and ultimately to an optimal nationwide distribution. We will support the development of a globally connected, advanced infrastructure that mitigates the risks of centralization while ensuring connectivity to international networks.
• We will provide support for long-term investment plans that focus on optimizing the placement of data centers in conjunction with Japan’s power and telecommunications infrastructure, as exemplified by the integration of power and data center operations.

We will promote the decarbonization of DC and the local production and consumption of energy.

We offer proposals for improving energy efficiency in existing data centers from both hardware and software perspectives.

• We are actively engaged in the renovation of older data centers and existing facilities used for other purposes, such as factories, into state-of-the-art data centers, thereby enhancing their value while achieving energy savings.
• By making effective use of existing facilities, we will reduce embodied carbon and contribute to reducing operational carbon by significantly improving PUE.

Comments from Company Representatives

• Comment from Nikken Sekkei, Representative Director President and CEO Atsushi Omatsu:
“Through projects commissioned by our clients, Nikken Sekkei has been working to solve social issues and advance technological development. However, in the coming era of rapid and significant social change, we believe it is also necessary for us to proactively address social issues on our own initiative. To achieve this, collaboration and cooperation with external partners are essential. The companies participating in this business alliance each possess world-class core competencies in their respective fields, and I am confident that they will function organically as a co-creation platform for digital infrastructure. Furthermore, I believe that the results of this co-creation will contribute to the delivery of more advanced data center projects.”

• Comment from Tetsuya Suwabe, Representative Director of Euras Energy President and CEO:
“Euras Energy has been contributing to the achievement of carbon neutrality through our renewable energy business. In recent years, the rapid development of generative AI has made the development of the underlying data centers an urgent priority. At the same time, balancing the increasing power demand of data centers with the reduction of environmental impact remains a major challenge on the path to carbon neutrality.Through this business partnership, we aim to contribute to the creation of new innovations and the preservation of the global environment, while also leveraging the evolution of social infrastructure driven by AI as an opportunity for our company’s growth.”

•Comment from Teruyuki Kishimoto, Representative Director, NTT Anode Energy President and CEO:
“The rising demand for power in data centers, driven by the rapid proliferation of generative AI, is recognized as a critical issue with significant implications for Japan’s industrial competitiveness and the lives of its citizens. The government is also actively pursuing the strategic attraction of data centers and growth industries (such as semiconductor factories), particularly in regions near renewable energy sources. The NTT Group has long been engaged in the data center business, building on its extensive experience in constructing and maintaining nationwide telecommunications infrastructure and its advanced operational management technologies. Leveraging this expertise and track record, we will actively provide multifaceted support—including technical assistance for data center construction and operation, as well as consulting services related to power and renewable energy procurement.”

•Comment from Takashi Furuta, Representative Director of R11i:
“The concept of ‘digital infrastructure’ emerged from the late 20th century through the 21st century, as the Internet connected the world and created a vast information space. Amid the continuing exponential growth of computing resources that support the Internet, the cloud, and generative AI, we must shift toward infrastructure—including power infrastructure—that supports a highly advanced symbiosis between humanity and the digital world. R11i will leverage its 30 years of business management expertise—including digital infrastructure development and customer acquisition strategies—for the well-being of all people living in Japan. We will join forces with Nikken Sekkei, Euras Energy, and NTT Anode Energy to support businesses involved in digital infrastructure.”
