JINNAN URBAN SPORTS PARK
Background of the JINNAN MARKET Event
Currently, urban public spaces face many challenges. In parks, in particular, numerous “prohibitions” have been established due to constraints such as ease of management and cost, restricting users’ freedom and causing these spaces to lose their inherent appeal.
On the other hand, as the population declines and urban structures change, the number of underutilized public spaces is expected to increase. If local residents actively use these spaces as venues for their own activities, this holds great potential for restoring vibrancy and vitality to the community.
In fact, when Nikken Sekkei conducted a social experiment in which users were allowed to freely pursue their desired activities in public spaces, many people expressed a desire for public spaces to serve as “venues for self-expression” and “points of connection with society” through events such as live performances and workshops, revealing the high level of latent demand.Moving forward, a new direction in urban design calls for mechanisms that, through collaboration with local communities, circulate revenue and enable the autonomous and sustainable management of public spaces.

About JINNAN MARKET #12
Now in its 12th year, this event will be held on an expanded scale, including the transformation of roadways around Chatan Park into a market area. Under the theme “Unite,” the event features a wide range of experiential and participatory activities designed to foster a sense of unity throughout the entire Shibuya Ward and Jinnan area through interaction among diverse people. In collaboration with VALLOON, Co Shibuya, and nearby elementary schools, the event will feature workshops enjoyable for both adults and children, as well as activities such as a runway showcasing dance performances. Over the course of two days, we will work together with participants and local residents to liven up the Shibuya and Jinnan areas.

Results of Our Activities to Date and Our Expectations for This Event
JINNAN MARKET has been held 11 times to date, and with each event, it has expanded its venue and attracted a growing number of participants.
Last year, in collaboration with the Shibuya Koen-dori Shopping District Promotion Association—which promotes local community development—we set up pop-up shops on the sidewalks of Koen-dori, the area’s main thoroughfare, and on Petit Koen-dori, successfully utilizing public road space in ways that had not been possible before. These initiatives to utilize street space are also positioned as social experiments aimed at realizing the community development vision set forth by the Shibuya Koen-dori Shopping Street Promotion Association, and JINNAN MARKET has evolved into an event that contributes to future community development in collaboration with local organizations. The number of visitors has been gradually increasing, and the event now attracts a total of over 10,000 visitors over the two days.
In addition, connections among participants facilitated by JINNAN MARKET are growing;for example, a houseplant retailer that had been a regular vendor at JINNAN MARKET leveraged the connections formed in Jinnan through the market when searching for a brick-and-mortar location, ultimately establishing a store near Jinnan—an area where they were already familiar with the customer base. In this way, the event has contributed not only during its duration but also to creating a vibrant local atmosphere on a daily basis.
Based on the increase in the “related population” resulting from the ongoing JINNAN MARKET events and its track record in utilizing public spaces such as streets, Nikken Sekkei has been commissioned since 2024 to plan and operate large-scale events organized by the Shibuya Koen-dori Regional Collaboration Event Executive Committee.By holding these large-scale events on the same day as JINNAN MARKET and collaborating with local art organizations and child-rearing support facilities, we are further energizing the community.
