“Urban Redevelopment Projects” are a method of urban renewal unique to Japan, based on a system in which landowners jointly undertake reconstruction, and have achieved a certain degree of success in revitalizing existing urban areas.For this session, we are pleased to welcome Mr. Norihiro Nakai, Professor at the Graduate School of Tokyo Institute of Technology and Chairman of the Japanese Institute of Urban Planning. He will outline the characteristics of this system and discuss the current challenges facing urban redevelopment projects as well as the future potential of urban redevelopment. ■About the Instructor
Nori Hiro Nakai
Professor, Graduate School of Social and Engineering Sciences, Tokyo Institute of Technology
Withdrew from the doctoral program at the Graduate School of Science and Engineering, Tokyo Institute of Technology, in 1986. After positions at the London School of Economics and Political Science and the University of Tokyo, among others, he has held his current position since 2002. His specialty is urban planning. He serves on the Urban Planning Division of the Social Infrastructure Development Council, Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (Chairman), the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Landscape Council (Chairman), and the Japan Society of Urban Planning (Chairman), among others. He holds a Doctor of Engineering degree.
