There have long been calls for a shift in the construction industry from a “flow” to a “stock” model, and since the bubble economy era, the proportion of domestic construction investment allocated to repairs and renovations has doubled. On the other hand, there are still few renovation projects that fully utilize the latest environmental and long-life extension technologies to meet today’s social demands.For this session, we are pleased to welcome Professor Tsuyoshi Seike of the University of Tokyo as our guest. From the perspective of architectural production, he has researched the relationship between production and design, as well as the seismic performance of non-structural components. In the field of environmental studies, he has conducted research on renovation technologies for extending the lifespan of buildings, as well as demolition and recycling technologies aimed at reducing waste.We will hear his insights on the themes of the environment and renovation, and explore the future of architecture in a “stock society.” (Facilitator: Shinya Furukawa)

Introduction to the Speaker
Mr. Tsuyoshi Seike
Associate Professor, The University of Tokyo; Graduate School of Frontier Sciences, Department of Social, Cultural, and Environmental Studies; Ph.D. (Engineering)
Completed the Master’s program in Architecture at the Graduate School of Engineering, University of Tokyo, in 1989.
He has held his current position since 1999. At the Architectural Institute of Japan, he has served on various committees, primarily those related to building exteriors. He has also served on committees involved in the formulation of public standards (such as the Comprehensive Seismic Design Standards for Government Facilities, Guidelines for Construction Supervision, Seismic Manual for Exterior Wall Construction Methods, and Guidelines for Supervision of Building Renovation Work).His publications include *Illustrated Encyclopedia: The Mechanics of Architecture* (Shokokusha), *Considering Tokyo’s Environment* (Asakura Shoten), *Sustainable Housing* (Toyo Keizai Inc.),“Seven Predictions for Architecture in 2025” (Nikkei BP), “How to Proceed with Architectural Regeneration: An Introduction to Architecture in the Era of the Building Stock” (Ichigaya Publishing), and “Architectural Regeneration Studies” (Ichigaya Publishing), among others.
