Exhibition Announcement: “The Nakanoshima Library and the Architectural Artistry of Magoi Noguchi” Exhibition

An exhibition featuring the work of architect Magoi Noguchi, who was part of the Temporary Architecture Department at Sumitomo Main Store—the predecessor of Nikken Sekkei—will be held. We hope you will join us.
<Exhibition Overview>
The early Meiji period in architecture was the era of the first generation of architects, such as Kingo Tatsuno, who directly absorbed Western civilization; however, for that generation, the importation of civilization itself was the goal. The second generation of architects who followed—including Magichi Noguchi—shone with their own unique brilliance during the late Meiji period, an era of cultural maturity.
Among them, Magoroku Noguchi sought not to import “architecture as an object,” but rather to richly design “architecture as an experience of space and as meaning.” This approach resonates with the philosophy of the Italian Renaissance and can also be seen as the embryonic stage of the Modernism that would emerge in later eras.
This exhibition focuses on the Nakanoshima Library and the Suma Villa—both designed and constructed around the same time—and attempts to explore Noguchi Magoroku’s architectural philosophy by asking, “What was Noguchi Magoroku thinking as he designed these works?”
