Traditionally, public spaces such as roads and station plazas have been developed based on standards and guidelines that prioritize convenience and safety.In recent years, efforts have been underway to incorporate local characteristics into the development of public spaces and to create a lively atmosphere through events and other initiatives. Furthermore, roads themselves are increasingly being redesigned to shift the focus from cars to bicycles and pedestrians.
At this forum, Masami Kobayashi, a leading expert in this field andVice President of Meiji University, a leading expert in this field, will discuss the latest trends, perspectives, and challenges in public space design. Following that, Hirokazu Yoneya, Chairman of the NPO Slow Society, will speak about the organization’s efforts to revitalize the area around Himeji Station and future challenges, such as how public spaces should be designed to maximize their utilization. Masami Kobayashi
Vice President, Meiji University; Professor, Department of Architecture, Faculty of Science and Technology, Urban Architecture Design Laboratory
1977: Graduated from the Department of Architecture, Faculty of Engineering, University of Tokyo. 1979: Completed the Master’s program in Architecture, Graduate School of Engineering, University of Tokyo. 1988: Completed the Master’s program at the Graduate School of Design, Harvard University.1989: Completed the Ph.D. program in Architecture at the Graduate School of Engineering, University of Tokyo. 1979–85: Worked at the Kenzo Tange & Associates Urban Architecture Design Institute. 1989–92: Director of Archimedia Design Institute, Inc. 1992: Full-time Lecturer, Department of Architecture, Faculty of Science and Technology, Meiji University.1997: Associate Professor, Department of Architecture, Faculty of Science and Technology, Meiji University. 2001: Visiting Professor, Harvard University. 2003: Professor, Department of Architecture, Faculty of Science and Technology, Meiji University. 2016: Vice President (in charge of Comprehensive Policy), Meiji University.
Hirokazu Kometani
Chairman of the Board, NPO Slow Society; Representative Director, Kometani Paper Tube Manufacturing Co., Ltd. President and CEO
Born in Showa 39, Hyogo Prefecture Government Himeji City. Graduated from the Faculty of Letters, University of Tokyo.
After working as a book editor at PHP Institute Co., Ltd., he joined Kometani Paper Tube Manufacturing Co., Ltd.
In Heisei 14, he served as President of the Himeji Junior Chamber International.
In Heisei 16, he served as President of the Japan Junior Chamber under the slogan “Realizing a Slow Society Enriched by Diverse Connections.”
