Magoichi Noguchi was an architect at the “Sumitomo Main Office Temporary Architecture Department,” the predecessor of Nikken Sekkei.
While the primary goal of architecture in the early Meiji period was the introduction of Western civilization itself, Magoroku Noguchi—an architect active during the late Meiji period, a time of cultural maturity—sought not to introduce “architecture as an object,” but rather to richly design “architecture as an experience of space and as meaning.”This approach resonates with the philosophy of the Italian Renaissance and can also be seen as a precursor to the Modernist movement of later eras.
In this exhibition, we have attempted to explore his architectural approach by asking, “What was Magoroku Noguchi thinking as he designed?”
