Five-Star Hotels: Japanese Designers Can Now Handle Complete Interior Design Projects

Japan still has relatively few five-star hotels compared to the rest of the world, and the reality is that the majority of them are designed by international interior designers.Even when Japanese designers were involved, their work was typically limited to specific areas such as restaurants or guest rooms. However, the CONRAD OSAKA, which opened this early summer, is the result of a collaboration between the Japanese design team of Yukio Hashimoto and Nikken Space Design, who handled the interior design for the entire hotel.
We are pleased to welcome architect Yukio Hashimoto and photographer Takeshi Nakasa, who has photographed numerous renowned hotels, to discuss the interior and overall design of the CONRAD OSAKA. (Kenichiro Toi)

Lecturer Profile
Mr. Yukio Hashimoto
Interior Designer / Yukio Hashimoto Design Studio
Born in 1962. Graduated from the Department of Design at Aichi Prefectural University of Fine Arts and Music in 1986. After working at Super Potato Co., Ltd., he established his own practice in 1996. He serves as a part-time lecturer at Aichi Prefectural University of Fine Arts and Music and Showa Women’s University.
Major works include “Otooto” (Shinjuku), “BEAMS HOUSE” (Marunouchi), “Suikyo-tei” (Ginza), “Billboard Live Tokyo” (Roppongi), “The Peninsula Tokyo” (Hibiya), “Forbidden City Crystal” (Taipei, Taiwan),“Hilton Niseko Village” (Niseko), Super Craft Tree (Tokyo Skytree 4F), InterContinental Osaka (Osaka), ROZILLA (Shin-Sanda), Tokyu Harvest Club Kyoto Takamine & VIALA (Kyoto), CONRAD OSAKA (in collaboration with NDS) (Osaka), the renovation of the Karuizawa Prince Hotel East (Karuizawa), and Tajimaya (Taipei), among others.
Recipient of numerous awards, including the NASHOP Lighting Design Contest Excellence Award, the JCD Excellence Award, the Silver Prize at the 9th Spatial Design Competition, and the 16th Takashimaya Art Award, among others.In April 2009, Shoten Kenchiku-sha published “Designer Showcase Vol. 1: Yukio Hashimoto,” and in December 2013, Rokuyosha published “LEDs and Bent Wappa—Evolving Traditional Design.”
Takeshi Nakasa
Photographer / Representative Director of Nacása & Partners Inc.
Born in Taito Ward, Tokyo, in 1949. Joined Yotsuya Studio in 1970.
He studied under Kinpei Murayama from 1971 and established the Nakasa Photography Office in 1977.
In 1989, he incorporated the company as Nacása & Partners Inc., Inc. Since then, he has been active as a photographer in the fields of architecture and interior design.
He continues to manage a busy shooting schedule with a staff of over 20 people. He also contributes to numerous architecture and interior design magazines both in Japan and abroad as a commentator on contemporary Japanese architecture and design culture.
