Prospects for a Post-“Modern Urban Planning” Era
~What Is Needed in the Debate on Regional Town Revitalization?~

Amid the current development boom in major cities, there are still voices suggesting that the revitalization of regional cities remains a work in progress. Mr. Nakano, who has been actively involved in community development projects across the country and served as a university professor until this spring, distributed a limited-edition publication titled “The Interstice Between Architecture and the City: The 1960s—Exploring Experiments in European and American Cities—Traces of Revitalizing Urban Vitality,” which was distributed in limited quantities and generated a tremendous response.
In this installment, we explore comparative urban theory between Japan and the West, incorporating “before and after” footage of Mr. Nakano’s travels both past and present over his 40-plus-year career,drawing on his experience in the Urban Design Section of Maki & Associates (led by Fumihiko Maki), to explore what “urban design”—a movement that began half a century ago—has sought to achieve. In addition, he will discuss expectations for the revitalization of regional cities and the prospects for “tactical urbanism,” a currently popular approach to utilizing public spaces.

Mr. Tsuneaki Nakano
Professor Emeritus, Shibaura Institute of Technology / Representative Director, Aplu Comprehensive Planning Office, Inc.
Graduated from the Department of Urban Engineering at the University of Tokyo in 1974; worked at Maki & Associates from 1974 to 1984; founded Aplu Comprehensive Planning Office in 1984; served as a professor in the Faculty of Systems Science and Engineering at Shibaura Institute of Technology from 2005 to 2017; specializes in urban design;and his work spans a wide range of fields from urban planning to architecture and landscape design. Major achievements include the Moji Port District urban development project, landscape improvements for roads surrounding the Imperial Palace, and the dispatch of designers to enhance the streetscape around the approach to Katsushika Shibamata Taishakuten Temple. Additionally, he served as a member and secretary-general of the Selection Committee for the New Tower (Tokyo Skytree) site, as well as a member of the Naming Selection Committee;expert committee member of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government’s Sumida River Renaissance Promotion Council; representative executive director of the Urban Environment Design Council; and part-time lecturer at the University of Tokyo’s Graduate School of Urban Development and the Tokyo University of the Arts.
