Prompted by the Great East Japan Earthquake, the Nikken Sekkei Volunteer Division (an in-house club) developed “evacuation maps” that illustrate the time required to reach higher ground on a map, thereby promoting risk communication regarding tsunamis in local communities. These maps are now being utilized by municipalities nationwide.
Starting in fiscal year Heisei 26, the project “Promoting Intergenerational and Interregional Collaboration through the Creation of Evacuation Maps for Various Disasters” was selected for the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST) Research Institute of Science and Technology for Society (RISTEX) research and development area titled “Creating Safe and Secure Cities and Regions Connected by Communities.” In collaboration with Meiji University,Chiba University, we have been refining a manual for conducting “escape map creation workshops”—which have been in high demand nationwide—through repeated trials and improvements during actual workshops.
As this project has now come to a temporary conclusion this September, we are organizing the “National Escape Map Creation Network Conference” to bring together architects, licensed architects, and community development leaders from across the country who are engaged in “escape map creation.” We will also be exhibiting materials related to escape maps, including the manual we have recently compiled and examples of workshops held in various regions.
