Introducing Hand-Drawn Sketches and Handcrafting Techniques That Enrich the Design Process

Thirty years ago, architectural design meant using a T-square and a drafting board, but today those tools have been replaced by a mouse and a computer monitor.CAD and BIM have become the standard tools for design, and while we may still sketch initial concepts with a pencil, it has become virtually unheard of to produce the final design drawings by hand. However, within Nikken Sekkei’s design process, hand-drawn sketches and the tactile experience of drawing still play a vital—and indeed, vibrant—role.
Here, we’re showcasing some of the work produced by our in-house illustration studio, which specializes in hand-drawn art, and our model-making workshop, which creates models in-house.
Just how richly a single hand-drawn illustration conveys the activity of cities and architecture. And just how eloquently a model can express a concept or a space in an instant.
The cities and buildings we propose are brought to life through these tactile elements. We hope you’ll experience the hand-drawn artistry and tactile quality of Nikken Sekkei.
