Sports Business in Australia
--Bidding for, Operating, and Building the Legacy of Major Sporting Events--

Japan is currently hosting a series of major sporting events, including the 2019 Rugby World Cup and the 2020 Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games. In this forum, we will learn from Australia—a country that has built both tangible and intangible legacies through its sporting events—about the significance of such events and their subsequent developments.

Mr . Kazuto Kimura
Senior Commercial Officer, Commercial Section, Australian Embassy
Niigata Prefecture A graduate of the Faculty of Business Administration at Hosei University.
From April 1987, he worked for five years at Daikyo Incorporated. During a period of booming resort development in Australia, he was responsible for supporting subsidiaries engaged in the construction and operation of hotels, golf courses, and restaurants, as well as residential land development and sales; he also handled overseas travel services and event planning.
He has been working at the Australian Embassy in Japan since April 1992.He was assigned to the Commercial Section, which is responsible for promoting exports from Australia, supporting companies expanding into Japan, attracting investment from Japan to Australia, and promoting study abroad. Since 2007, he has served as Senior Commercial Officer in charge of services and technology. He is primarily responsible for supporting companies in the sports business, infrastructure, financial services, and tourism sectors as they expand into Japan.
Recently, in particular, he has supported the entry into Japan of numerous experienced sports business companies in preparation for the 2019 Rugby World Cup and the 2020 Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games, while also exploring business opportunities in the professional sports sector, which is expected to see future growth in Japan.
In 2015, he was awarded the “Australia Day Medal 2015,” given to government staff who have made significant contributions.
Member of the Sports Business Committee of the Australian and New Zealand Chamber of Commerce in Japan.
His hobbies include tennis, watching sports, and managing his condominium. He organizes networking events with sports professionals and representatives from foreign embassies, often featuring Australian wine and barbecues.
