Toshima Ward has achieved zero children on waiting lists for two consecutive years, and its reputation as a child-friendly community is growing.Following Kyoto and Kanazawa, Toshima has been selected as a domestic candidate city for the “2019 East Asia Culture City” initiative, which features cultural and artistic events across Japan, China, and South Korea. With an eye toward the upcoming Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games, efforts involving collaboration among various public and private sector entities are expected to accelerate.In particular, regarding the area around Ikebukuro Station, the “Infrastructure Development Policy”—which serves as a compass for urban development—was finalized in May of this year, and a roadmap leading up to the target year of 2035 was presented to realize the vision of an “International Art and Culture City.”
The development of the former government building site, “Hareza Ikebukuro,”the development of four parks that will serve as the core of an art and culture hub, and the introduction of a new transportation system (low-speed electric buses)—our three panelists will discuss Toshima Ward’s policies and Ikebukuro’s urban development, covering everything from projects nearing completion to medium- and long-term goals.
