Entries for the “Urban Public Space Design Competition 2018,” an international competition focused on public spaces in cities, began on September 1. This competition is co-hosted by Nikken Sekkei and Shibuya Future Design (FDS), which was established this year, with support from Shinkenchiku-sha and sponsorship from Akatsuki. The jury will be chaired by Takayuki Kishii, with jury members Tatsuo Nishizawa, Chiaki Hayashi, and Natsuo Sato. Nikken Sekkei and Akatsuki are also participating partners of FDS.
Project Theme: “Shibuya”-Style Public Spaces
The city of “Shibuya” encompasses not only the globally recognized charms of the area around Shibuya Station—such as the iconic Scramble Crossing and the unique streets and back alleys—but also a diverse array of distinctive neighborhoods, including pleasant residential environments and natural features like lush parks, greenways, and rivers.The culture layered within this “Shibuya” creates unique emotions and experiences, attracting a diverse range of people.
Could it be said that the word “Shibuya” itself has evolved from signifying a specific region to encompassing culture, trends, lifestyles, and behaviors—and that this transformation is creating a new urban experience that captivates people?
We therefore redefine “Shibuya” as a term signifying an attractive urban experience.
In this competition, we are seeking proposals for public spaces that embody “Shibuya” in this sense. Specifically, using various “Shibuya-like” urban spaces and virtual environments from around the world as settings, we look forward to diverse perspectives and ideas—ranging from the layout and design of spaces that enhance the city’s appeal to the urban activities, social systems, and services provided within them.
Registration and submission of entries must be postmarked by Monday, December 10, 2018.The judging process will follow a two-stage format featuring a public second-round judging session. Ten teams will be selected in the first round. In the second round, the 10 selected teams will give presentations, participate in a Q&A session with the judges, and undergo a public judging session by the panel. Based on this, one Grand Prize (prize money: 1 million yen),three Excellence Awards (prize money: 500,000 yen each), and six Honorable Mentions (prize money: 100,000 yen each).
