The Future of Eco-Cities Shaped by Wooden Apartment Buildings

Wooden architecture, which is now regarded as a form of sustainable environmental architecture, has been gaining attention in recent years.
The reason for this is that, compared to limited energy resources such as petroleum and the environmentally burdensome production of concrete and steel, forests and timber are abundant within each country. Wood requires less energy for production and maintenance, and it is considered a circular resource that enables reforestation, construction, and the reuse of waste materials.
It is also gaining attention for reducing the burden of construction work due to its light weight and quick construction times.
In Japan, as well, laws are beginning to be established to facilitate the active use of wood in urban construction. Our company is also undertaking various initiatives aimed at realizing wooden urban apartment complexes; however, due to numerous challenges, we have not yet succeeded in bringing this vision to fruition.

At this NIKKEN FORUM, we intend to discuss the realization of wood-frame apartment buildings by drawing on domestic trends in the environmental sector of urban planning and architecture, as well as case studies from Europe—a leader in this field—and by incorporating perspectives from government, research, the supply side, and general users.
