Hokkaido, Japan’s largest municipality, covering approximately 22.1% of the country’s land area, captivates people from around the world with its land blessed with abundant natural beauty.In addition to being Japan’s largest food-producing region, Hokkaido is actively pursuing cutting-edge initiatives such as promoting the space industry, attracting autonomous vehicle demonstration tests, introducing offshore wind power, fostering local energy production and consumption, and supporting employment for a diverse range of people.At this forum, we will discuss Hokkaido—a region brimming with potential for sustainable development—from the perspective of carbon neutrality. We are honored to have Mr. Shinichi Tanabe of the Architectural Institute of Japan (Chairman) as our keynote speaker. Additionally, Mayor Katsuhiro Akimoto of Sapporo, whose city is celebrating its 100th anniversary of municipal government this year, will join us as a special guest.We hope you will tune in.

Shinichi Tanabe (Waseda University, Professor, Department of Architecture, School of Creative Science and Engineering, Faculty of Science and Engineering; Architectural Institute of Japan Chairman)
1987: Completed the doctoral program in the Department of Architecture at the Waseda University; awarded a Doctor of Engineering degree. 1984–86: Research Fellow at the Technical University of Denmark; 1986: Research Assistant in the Faculty of Science and Engineering at Waseda University; 1988: Full-time Lecturer in the Faculty of Home Economics at Ochanomizu University; 1992: Associate Professor in the Faculty of Life Sciences at the same university;1992–93: Research Fellow at the University of California, Berkeley; 1999: Waseda University Assistant Professor, Department of Architecture, Faculty of Science and Engineering; since 2007: Waseda University Professor, Department of Architecture, Faculty of Creative Science and Engineering, School of Science and Engineering. Member of the Architectural Institute of Japan Chairman and the Basic Policy Subcommittee of the Agency for Natural Resources and Energy, among others.

Joined Sapporo City Hall in 1979; Promoted Informat Director ization in the Planning and Coordination Bureau in 2004; Planning Director in the Citizen Town Development Bureau in 2005; Mayor of Minami Ward in 2008; Director of the Mayor's Policy Office in 2009; Deputy Mayor in 2012; retired from Sapporo City Hall in 2014; elected mayor in the 2015 mayoral election (term starting May 2); re-elected in 2019 (currently in his second term)
