How to Enjoy Heritage Architecture

Historic buildings from Japan’s modern and contemporary eras have tended to be replaced with entirely new, efficient structures through a “tear-down-and-rebuild” approach that prioritized economic growth. This is because such buildings were considered a “burden” to their owners, as they offered inferior comfort and seismic resistance and required ongoing maintenance to counter deterioration.However, in recent years, advances in construction technology have made it possible to modernize the functionality of old buildings without compromising their unique charm. Old buildings are not merely objects of admiration; they hold the potential to serve as vessels that support daily life and foster new forms of “cultural development.”

We will be joined by writer Minori Kai, author of *Walking and Eating: A Stroll Through Tokyo’s Delicious Architectural Gems*—the book that inspired the popular TV program *Lunch at a Famous Building* (TV Osaka)—as well as Professor Yoshiyuki Yamana of Tokyo University of Science, an expert on architectural preservation both in Japan and abroad,and Hiroshi Miyazawa, an illustrator and writer who contributes the serialized column “Illustrated Strolls Through Famous Architecture” to our web media—will join us as guests to discuss the enriching lifestyle that comes from living alongside historic architecture. She writes for books and magazines, focusing primarily on travel, walks, sweets, souvenirs, classic hotels, and architecture. She also serves as a supervising editor for local government tourism brochures. She writes the serialized column “Minori Kai’s Half-Day Architectural Walk” for Casa BRUTUS web.She has authored more than 50 books. She also served as a consultant for the TV drama “Lunch at Famous Architectural Landmarks (Tokyo Edition),” which was based on her book *Walking and Eating: A Stroll Through Tokyo’s Delicious and Famous Architectural Landmarks*.

Born in Bunkyo Ward, Tokyo, in 1966. After graduating from the Tokyo University of Science and working at the Kayama Atelier, he moved to France. He completed the DPLG program at the École d’Architecture de Belleville in Paris and a doctoral program at the University of Paris I, and worked at the Henri Ciriani Atelier and the École d’Architecture de Nantes, among others.Since 2002, he has been working at Tokyo University of Science. He has received the Special Jury Prize at the Venice Biennale, the Order of Arts and Letters (Chevalier), and the Japan ICOMOS Award, among others. His publications include *Le Corbusier’s World Heritage Sites* and *Jean Prouvé*.

Born in Tokyo in 1967.In 1990, he graduated from the Faculty of Political Science and Economics at Waseda University and joined Nikkei BP. He was assigned to the editorial department of the architecture magazine *Nikkei Architecture*. From 2016 to 2019, he served as editor-in-chief of *Nikkei Architecture*. Since April 2020, he has co-directed Office Bunga with Tatsuo Iso.His publications include *Kengo Kuma: An Illustrated Guide to Architecture*, *Nikken Sekkei: The Untold Story*, *A Pilgrimage through Showa-Era Modern Architecture**, *A Pilgrimage through Pre-Modern Architecture**, and *Masterpieces of Japan’s Historic Architecture** (titles marked with an asterisk (*) are co-authored with Tatsuo Iso).
