Nikken Sekkei and the School of Architecture and Urban Studies at Shenzhen University Host a Forum on “New Trends and Practices in Sustainable Design”

On December 8, 2022, Nikken Sekkei and the School of Architecture and Urban Planning at Shenzhen University held a forum at the university's Motohara Auditorium themed "New Trends and Practices of Sustainable Design." There were 60 on-site participants and over 2,000 participants via live streaming.
At the beginning of the forum, Academician Meng Jianmin (member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering), Dean Fan Yue of the School of Architecture and Urban Planning at Shenzhen University, and Atsushi President and CEO Omatsu, CEO of Nikken Sekkei, gave speeches. Afterwards, Zhang Xiaohui (Makino Akihiro), General Manager of Nikken Sekkei (Shenzhen), and President Fan Yue took the stage to read out the strategic cooperation agreement signed between Nikken Sekkei and the school.
Wataru Tanaka, Principal of Urban Design Group at Nikken Sekkei Urban and Civil Project Department, delivered a keynote speech titled "Sustainable Design—Challenges at the Urban Level," explaining sustainability in environmental, social, and economic aspects, as well as the importance of design aimed at achieving sustainability in emergencies. Next, Tanaka presented five design strategies pursued by Nikken Sekkei for a low-carbon society (green-centered urban development, TOD (Station-Town Integrated Development), urban redevelopment, public realm formation, and district-wide energy management), and introduced related project cases within Japan and Shenzhen.
Miyuken Ken from Director Global Design Department at Nikken Sekkei introduced Japan's and Nikken Sekkei's initiatives as Japan aims for a carbon-neutral society, from Japan's policy to achieve zero carbon by 2050 to Nikken Sekkei's declaration of a climate emergency. He proposed different policies on the premises of existing and newly constructed buildings, as well as proposed optimization methods for off-site energy.
In the latter half of the forum, in addition to speakers Tanaka, Sanyou, Stephen Lau (Visiting Professor at Shenzhen University), Professor Li Baofeng (Central China University of Science and Technology), Professor Song Yehao (Tsinghua University), and Specially Appointed Professor Liu Heng (Shenzhen University), a panel discussion was held by Benjamin Chan, Director of LWK+PARTNERS, Manager Deng Tianqi, and Zhang Xiaohui, General Manager of Nikken Sekkei (Shenzhen).
In their closing remarks, representatives from both Nikken Sekkei and the School of Architecture and Urban Planning at Shenzhen University expressed their commitment to "continue to promote further cooperation and jointly develop high-level research, education, and practice," expressing their desire to contribute to a better future for cities and architecture through academic research and joint research.
