Nikken Sekkei is supporting the “Summer Riko Challenge 2023—Experience Careers in Science and Engineering!” event, organized by the Bureau for Gender Equality at Cabinet Office to foster talent in science and engineering, and will be hosting a workshop.
The environmental issues we face are among the social challenges that every single person on Earth must address. In this workshop, participants will learn about the “circular economy”—a concept that emphasizes minimizing waste by carefully using and reusing old items to make the most of limited resources.We will also brainstorm ideas for repurposing fire hoses—which are discarded in large quantities during their mandatory decennial inspections—into new, usable items.
The Nikken Sekkei Tokyo Building reopened this past April following renovations to the first through third floors.In addition to eco-friendly natural materials, the building actively incorporates materials and products that have been recycled in line with the principles of the circular economy. We hope that by touring this office and experiencing firsthand a glimpse of the design concepts we architects develop in our daily work, you will gain an appreciation for the significance of architectural design and find this tour helpful as you consider the future of society and your own future.

Tomofumi Yamashita | Tomofumi Yamashita
Member of the Sustainable Design Group at Nikken Sekkei Engineering Department. Spent two years in Denmark working for a startup that promotes upcycling in the architecture industry. Currently provides consulting services on the utilization of existing building stock and conducts research and practical work on circular design in architecture.
Mariko Kawano | Mariko Kawano
Born in Tokyo. After working at the Yasutaka Yoshimura Laboratory (Waseda University), he is currently based at Nikken Sekkei (Architectural Design Department). Since his student days, he has been interested in the role of architecture in a mature society, and his architectural designs focus on ecosystems that transcend the framework of the human world—such as his project “Group of Individual Chicken Coops,” a “chicken town” in which chickens live in a symbiotic relationship with humans.
Masahiro Kato | Masahiro Kato
I have a total of seven years of experience living abroad. I have been responsible for designing facilities for various uses, including offices, schools, factories, and logistics warehouses, and most recently, I led the renovation of Nikken Sekkei’s Tokyo office. I am currently employed at Architectural Design Department.
Amiko Tagami | Amiko Tagami
Representative of “Re Sail Factory,” which creates bags and accessories by repurposing materials such as sails and ropes that are no longer needed at the beach or by the water. The company breathes new life into items from the ocean and waterfront that would otherwise become industrial waste, creating eco-friendly, sustainable, and unique products from Shonan.
