After two years of preparation, the opening ceremony for the 4th Seoul Urban Architecture Biennale was held on September 1 at the main venue, “Seonghyeon Open Green Space.”The opening ceremony was attended by Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon, Seoul Metropolitan Council Speaker Kim Hyun-ki, diplomatic envoys from various countries accredited to South Korea, architecture professionals, and citizens. Atsushi Ohmatsu (Representative Director, President and CEO President and CEO Executive Officer), Kiyoshi Okumori (Member of the Board Senior Executive Officer), and Wataru Tanaka (Executive Officer) from Nikken Sekkei were invited and participated in the event.
On the second day of the event, held at Seoul City Hall, Kiyoshi Okumori (Member of the Board Senior Executive Officer) and Wataru Tanaka ( ) from our firm participated in Session 1 of the International Forum—one of the event’s programs—titled“The City of Land: Coexistence of Density and Publicness,” our firm’s Kiyoki Okumori ( ) and Wataru Tanaka (Executive Officer) delivered a presentation titled “Cooperative Design for Public Spaces as ‘New Urban Infrastructures’” on ~TOKYO STATION YAESU DEVELOPMENT and MIYASHITA PARK~.

In addition, James von Klemperer (KPF), Jeroen Dirckx (KCAP Partner),Min Seong-jin (SKM Architects), and Kang Byoung Keun (Chief Architect of Seoul), among others, participated in a panel discussion on “Expansion of Public Spaces in Large-scale Urban Development,” focusing on the future of Seoul, Tokyo, and other cities.
At the “Guest Cities Exhibition, PARALLEL GROUNDS, TOKYO,” Nikken Sekkei is presenting an exhibition titled “Cooperative Design for New Urban Infrastructures ~ TOKYO STATION YAESU DEVELOPMENT and MIYASHITA PARK ~.”
How did Tokyo’s attractive public spaces come to be in such a densely populated city? The city’s most appealing public spaces in recent years emerged as part of urban regeneration projects following the collapse of the bubble economy in 1990; they were created through collaboration between the public and private sectors to enhance the quality of daily life for city residents.This exhibition explores how these spaces in Tokyo were created and the mechanisms behind them through specific case studies.
