Nikken Sekkei is supporting the event “Summer Riko Challenge 2024—Experience Careers in Science and Engineering!” organized by the Bureau for Gender Equality (Cabinet Office), which aims to foster talent in science and engineering, and will be hosting a workshop.
Thanks to recent technological advances that have made it possible to ensure safety and comfort, modern and contemporary historic buildings are increasingly being preserved, renovated, and put to new uses, attracting significant attention.
While the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) advocates for the utilization of existing building stock, an increasing number of companies are relocating their headquarters from central urban areas to regional areas in the post-COVID era, creating opportunities for the utilization of historic buildings.
Furthermore, the value of utilizing historic buildings is being recognized in light of environmental considerations such as decarbonization and energy conservation, as well as issues surrounding industrial waste. Therefore, we invite you to join us on a heritage architecture tour, where we will explore historic architecture together.

In 1992, after completing his master’s degree at Nagoya University, he joined Nikken Sekkei.His areas of expertise are structural design and seismic engineering. Among the buildings for which he has been responsible for structural design are the seismic retrofit of the Aichi Prefectural Government Main Building and the seismic retrofit of the Aichi Prefectural Police Headquarters. For the Kyoto City Hall renovation project currently under construction, he is in charge of designing a complex building where new construction and seismic retrofitting are being integrated.Drawing on his extensive experience in seismic retrofitting of buildings of high historical value, he has been leading the Heritage Business team since 2016 while continuing to handle structural design projects.He earned his Ph.D. in Engineering in 2011 and, alongside his professional work, serves as a committee secretary and working group chair for the Architectural Institute of Japan, contributing to the advancement of seismic engineering.

What is Riko Challenge?
"Science and Engineering Challenge" (Riko-Challe) is an initiative led by the Bureau for Gender Equality (Cabinet Office) to encourage middle and high school students, as well as college students, to develop an interest in science and engineering fields, clearly envision their future selves, and make informed career choices (challenges).
