An Exhibition on "Toilets That Everyone Can Use," as Envisioned by High School Students
~If We Were to Create “Restrooms That Anyone Can Use” in a New Large-Scale Commercial Facility~

Under the theme “If we were to create ‘restrooms that anyone can use’ in a new large-scale commercial facility,” this exhibition showcases the results of a class held last year in which 25 first-year high school students from Nikaido High School, affiliated with Japan Women’s College of Physical Education, discussed social issues and devised solutions.
Each idea is accompanied by a comment from Kaede Hatashima of our company, who was in charge of the conceptual design for “TOILET”—a project located on the 3rd floor of the Nikken Sekkei Tokyo Building that focuses not on “who uses it” but on “how it is used.”Our company conducted a workshop on the same theme (the “Summer Riko Challenge 2022,” organized by Cabinet Office), and we shared a report on that event on note. After seeing this, Ms. Riya Takahashi, a teacher at the school, incorporated the concept into her class, making this exhibition possible.

Cabinet Office Organized primarily by the Bureau for Gender Equality, this event aims to address the current decline in the number of professionals in science and engineering fields. It is designed to encourage junior high and high school students, as well as college students—particularly women—to develop an interest in these fields, envision their future careers, and make informed career choices (and take on new challenges).

Located on the 3rd floor of our Tokyo Building, this restroom focuses not on “who uses it” but on “how it is used.”For this restroom, we reexamined the traditional categorization of restroom spaces and designed three types of stalls based on activities other than using the restroom: “Relax” (for meditation, naps, etc.), “Refresh” (for brushing teeth, stretching, etc.), and “Styling” (for changing clothes and grooming).
