“Tsunagi,” now available from Sanshin Metal Industries ~

President and CEO San Shin Metal Industry Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Shinhama, Tadaoka-cho, Senboku-gun, Osaka Prefecture; Representative Director: President and CEO:Hiroaki Arai) will begin manufacturing and selling the “Tsunagi” wooden unit, which was planned and produced by Nikken Sekkei, starting July 15, 2021.
“Tsunagi” is a wooden unit made from small-diameter lumber that can be easily assembled, disassembled, and relocated.
The basic unit, consisting of 45mm square solid wood available through general distribution channels, connecting pieces called “clamps,” and wheels for mobility, can be easily assembled by “anyone, anywhere in Japan” in about 30 minutes. Using the same components, it can be transformed into a variety of shapes—such as desks, shelves, benches, and planters—and utilized for a wide range of purposes.Nikken Wood Lab—a team at Nikken Sekkei dedicated to research and development in wood and timber construction—developed the product with the aim of promoting the use of wood, which is essential for forest conservation in Japan (*trademark registered; patent and design rights pending), and Sanshin Metal Industries commercialized it.
Development and refinement proceeded through various trial events conducted in 2020 with the cooperation of Japanese Red Cross Ashikaga Hospital and Tokushima Prefecture, leading to the current production and sales launch. As the first product in this series, the “Moshi-mo Tsunagi Wood Kit”—which can be reconfigured into spaces suitable for medical use or as shelters in emergencies—will go on sale starting July 15.

"Tsunagi" is a system that allows you to build spaces of any size and for any purpose using wood and specialized clamps. Since it involves no difficult machining or handling of heavy objects, assembly is simple. Whether for everyday life, special events, or emergencies, you can create the space you need right then and there with your own hands.

Continuing to use wood promotes the sustainable use of timber resources and helps maintain the healthy functioning of forests. We envision a future where “Tsunagi-ki” enriches the connection between forests and people.

This kit allows you to use the space as furniture or a café booth on a daily basis, but in an emergency, it can be reconfigured into a space suitable for medical use or as an evacuation shelter.

By combining the necessary components with the basic open booth design, you can easily create a space tailored to your needs.The “Open Booth,” which offers a sense of the warmth of wood and an open, airy feel, can be assembled using 23 pieces of lumber (9 pieces measuring 2.8 m × 45 mm square, 12 pieces measuring 2.1 m × 45 mm square, and 2 pieces measuring 0.5 m × 45 mm square), 37 clamps, 6 casters, and one sheet of ceiling membrane material.

Depending on your creativity, there are many ways to use “Tsunagi.” It’s already being put to good use in a variety of settings.

Going forward, we plan to sell “Anywhere Tsunagi,” a product that allows users to create even the smallest of spaces—such as office interiors, event venues, and pop-up shops—and whose applications range from recreational use to emergency situations. We also offer proposals for spatial designs using “Tsunagi,” as well as the planning and implementation of wood education workshops featuring “Tsunagi.”
Nikken Wood Lab (Nikken Sekkei) and Sanshin Metal Industries will continue to work toward creating a better social environment through “Tsunagi-ki” by building spaces that connect people through wood—whether in daily life, play, or times of emergency.
