First Japanese architectural firm to disclose information

PRESS RELEASE
2022.11.01
Nikken Sekkei Ltd. (Headquarters: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; Representative Director: President and CEO; Atsushi Omatsu, hereinafter “Nikken Sekkei”) announced on October 7 of this year that it endorses the recommendations of the TCFD (Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures)*1, and on October 12, joined the TCFD Consortium*2, a forum for discussion among endorsing companies and financial institutions.Furthermore, we are pleased to announce that today we disclosed climate-related information based on the TCFD recommendations on the Nikken Sekkei website*3.
This marks the first time a design firm in Japan has disclosed information in accordance with the TCFD.

Greenhouse gas emissions from buildings designed by Nikken Sekkei account for approximately one-hundredth of Japan’s total emissions. Recognizing the gravity of this situation, we issued a “Climate Emergency Declaration” in March 2021. As a firm that has been given the opportunity to collaborate with numerous clients, Nikken Sekkei’s role and responsibility are boundless.

Based on the TCFD recommendations, many clients are disclosing information related to climate change. We believe that by disclosing information within the TCFD framework, we can track our clients’ initiatives and weave our proposals for them into a cohesive narrative.Furthermore, we will use this as an opportunity for all executives and employees to address climate change issues by taking a holistic view of Nikken Sekkei’s operations.

The Nikken Group’s tagline, “EXPERIENCE, INTEGRATED,” conveys the message: “Combining diverse experiences to deliver enriching experiences.”By integrating the expertise of planners, architects, and engineers, and by focusing our passion, wisdom, and technology, we express our commitment to contributing to our clients and society by taking on the challenge of creating spaces with new value and building social systems. Furthermore, the “Management Plan 2021–25” sets forth “Evolution Toward a Social and Environmental Design Platform” as its VISION. It states that we will take the lead in solving social issues by transcending numerous boundaries, and that our top priority is “achieving carbon neutrality.”

We view the issue of climate change as a challenge that requires us to fully leverage the spirit embodied in “EXPERIENCE, INTEGRATED.” Through information disclosure based on the TCFD recommendations, we expect to significantly advance the sharing of awareness with our clients and other stakeholders.

Nikken Sekkei “Climate Emergency Declaration” (March 2021)

1. We will transform the way we work and achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions from Nikken Sekkei’s business activities by 2050.
2. We will propose a carbon-neutral model for urban and architectural design and workstyles by 2050, and using a backcasting approach, present the necessary measures for the period from 2021 to 2050 in the form of annual plans.
3. We will envision the future of communities—characterized by alternating cycles of centralization and decentralization—and propose locally accessible carbon-neutral solutions through flexible systems that integrate infrastructure and architectural functions.
4. We will support the development of screening systems to evaluate corporate environmental performance and contribute to the promotion of ESG real estate and urban infrastructure investments.
5. We will support clients in solving challenges by sharing the urgency of taking immediate action. Furthermore, we will communicate this message to society to foster public support.
