Setting Targets in Line with the "Net Zero by 2050" Climate Emergency Declaration
SBT is a greenhouse gas emissions reduction target aligned with the Paris Agreement, which aims to limit global temperature rise to well below 2°C above pre-industrial levels and to pursue efforts to limit the increase to 1.5°C.
In 2021, Nikken Sekkei issued a “Climate Emergency Declaration,” through which the company, as a private-sector entity, seeks to balance economic activity with the realization of a decarbonized society and to engage with society on this issue.※2The company announced its goal of achieving net-zero by 2050. This means that the GHG (greenhouse gas) emission reduction targets set to achieve this goal have been certified by a third party as being based on scientific evidence.

Eligibility of Companies to Claim Emissions Reduction Credits
Recently, “reduction contribution” has been gaining attention as a metric for evaluating companies’ ability to address the challenge of reducing GHG emissions.According to guidance from the WBCSD (World Business Council for Sustainable Development), obtaining Science-Based Targets (SBT) is cited as a criterion for a company’s “eligibility” to claim emission reduction contributions, and achieving SBT status is regarded as the basis for a company to publicly declare its environmental contributions. For more information on emission reduction contributions, please refer to our press release.
Nikken Sekkei will continue to publish its sustainability report※3We will disclose our greenhouse gas emissions and strive to ensure that reductions are steadily implemented in accordance with our established targets.
