Redefining the Value of the “Ginza Line,” the First Subway in the East

As part of the renovation of the Ginza Line—which, as the first subway system in the East, has connected Tokyo’s most iconic neighborhoods since its opening in 1934—we implemented design management centered on the user’s perspective.
We began by reexamining and redefining the very purpose of the subway itself. We analyzed user experiences gathered through fieldwork and interviews, and derived the Ginza Line’s line identity as “the subway closest to the surface.” Building on this, we took an integrated view of the “things” (spaces and environments), the “experiences” (services), and the systems that generate them, aiming to create a travel experience that is intuitive and easy to use.
