“The Tokyo Resort”: Perspectives on the Concepts of “Japanese-ness” and “Tokyo-ness”
A new construction project for a hotel located directly across from the National Stadium. Situated in the Jingu Gaien area—which, despite being in the heart of the city, is blessed with lush greenery and historic and cultural facilities—the project proposes a new kind of stay that harmoniously blends Tokyo’s urban sophistication with the relaxed atmosphere of a resort. The design draws inspiration from the light, shadows, and springs found within a “forest.” The natural beauty of the Jingu Gaien woods is expressed through the furniture and artwork. All guest rooms feature balconies constructed from domestically sourced cedar and offer refreshing views in all directions. To maximize the integration of the abundant outdoor space, wooden lounge areas have been placed along the windows. The design seamlessly connects the interior and exterior spaces, flowing from “relaxation area → window area → balcony → scenery.” Here, we have embodied a refined, slow-paced lifestyle born from one of Tokyo’s “precious pockets of open space.”
