Respect for the past, new creativity, legitimacy for the future

A renovation plan for the Nikko Kanaya Hotel annex, Japan's oldest resort hotel. While utilizing the building’s distinctive Japanese-style wooden design -- a registered tangible cultural property -- the renovation preserves and restores important elements that speaks of Kanaya Hotel's history, such as the classic, royal atmosphere of the guest rooms where the Emperor and other famous persons, both Japanese and foreign, have stayed, as well as the decorative details and lighting that retain the memory of the hotel's opening.
Additionally, by incorporating harmonizing elements that meet contemporary needs, the project pays respect to the past while creating a new appeal and a future legacy.
