Dignified Tranquility
The Ritz-Carlton Spa—the first Ritz-Carlton facility to feature hot spring baths—has opened on the shores of Lake Chuzenji within Nikko National Park.Based on the concept of “Dignified Tranquility,” this premium space has been created in a setting surrounded by rugged terrain bearing traces of volcanic activity and lush greenery. Here, guests can immerse themselves in the ever-changing ambiance and mystical atmosphere while purifying both body and mind in the tranquil waters. The entrance to the spa and hot spring area is tucked away just a short walk down an outdoor corridor from the hotel’s main building. Passing through a long, quiet corridor designed to resemble a mountain pass, guests bow their heads as they pass through the noren curtain, prepare themselves, and step into the hot spring. We aimed to create a sequence that allows guests to relive the nature of Nikko and a space where they can experience “In Praise of Shadows,” the Japanese aesthetic sensibility. The artwork features pieces by artists whose work conveys a primal vitality. The doors of the treatment rooms were adorned with peonies—a traditional motif of Nikko-bori woodcarving—by a sculptor from the National Treasure, Nikko Tōshō-gū Shrine.
