Toshihiko Kono

After completing his master’s degree at the University of Tokyo in 1982 and working for the Japanese National Railways, he joined Nikken Sekkei in 1987. As a structural engineer, he has been responsible for the structural design of a wide variety of buildings, including the renovation of the Shizuoka Prefectural Government East Building (2000 JSCA Award), Midland Square (2007 Japan Steel Structure Association Achievement Award), HOKI Museum (2012 Japan Structural Design Award), NBF Osaki (2012 Japan Seismic Isolation Structure Association Award), and Building No. 1 of the Chofu Campus, Faculty of Music, Toho Gakuen University (2019 Architectural Institute of Japan Award (Project)).Guided by the mottos “Learning from the past to understand the present” and “The timeless and the transient,” he approaches structural design by valuing craftsmanship and human connections. He is a member of the Architectural Institute of Japan, the Japan Society of Structural Engineers, the Japan Structural Engineers Club, and the Japan Institute of Architects.
