A Multi-sensory Stimulating Learning Center
With a campus located in Tokyo's fashionable Shibuya district, Kokugakuin University has undergone 15 years of redevelopment to provide classroom functions and rich exterior space for up to 10,000 students. The Sogo Gakushukan (Building No. 6) was designed as a "detached" on-site structure between a historic shrine and a quiet residential area as a place for students from Japan and abroad to socialize. Three local architectural design elements (the "wall of flying geese," the "curved roof," and the "tilted window") were used to balance the creation of student comfort and residential tranquility. The ability to share sunlight, ventilation, and lush greenery from the windowsills creates interaction between the university and the nearby residents, stakeholders with otherwise contrasting needs.
