“Embracing Nature, Functionality & Symbolism”

This design for Chinese acoustic components maker Goertek’s R&D headquarters in Qingdao serves three broad purposes: to integrate its global resources, attract elite talent, and promote sustainable technological innovations. The project site is located in the foothills of the vast Laoshan National Forest Park, a popular tourist destination made famous in Taoist cultural lore. The 115,058m2 facility area features a 600m frontage along a trunk road from the city to scenic Mt. Laoshan, a view complemented by terraced cherry and apricot orchards. The client’s request for a high-tech campus with functions for office, R&D, and factory space covers more than 300,000m2 (at Phase 2 completion). The goal was to create an architecture that fits this bucolic natural environment, allowing for enjoyment and corporate image enhancement.
