Athletes’ Village Plaza

This facility is a temporary structure built within the Athletes' Village for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games, consisting of spaces for interaction and ceremonies for athletes, media, VIPs, and guests. The project scheme envisioned borrowing timber from municipalities across Japan, assembling it as a temporary facility, dismantling it after the Games, and returning it to each municipality. Subsequently, the returned timber would be reused in other forms, contributing to the legacy of the Games. By constructing a single facility using timber collected from all over Japan, the project aimed to express the nation's unity in supporting the Games through architecture, and to showcase the appeal of domestically produced timber both domestically and internationally. Based on these standards, the timber was felled, dried, and milled locally by each municipality and received according to the construction schedule. After use, the timber was returned to each municipality in stages, with plans for its subsequent use in benches, public facilities, and other applications.
