The World's Largest Underground Water Tank for Observing Subatomic Particles and the Universe
A neutrino detector planned for one of the world’s largest man-made cavities, located approximately 600 meters underground in Kamioka, Gifu Prefecture. This international project aims to elucidate the history of the universe’s evolution and the unified theory of elementary particles; Nikken Sekkei is responsible for the design of the water tank, the support structures for the light sensors, and peripheral equipment.
The cylindrical water tank, with a diameter of 68 meters and a depth of 71 meters, will have an effective volume approximately 10 times that of the currently operational Super-Kamiokande (since 1996), resulting in a dramatic improvement in observational accuracy.
Through repeated discussions with researchers at the Institute for Cosmic Ray Research regarding various requirements—including the unique environmental conditions, safety, cost-effectiveness, and future expandability—Nikken Sekkei drew upon its collective technical expertise to develop the optimal design.
